China: Heavy rains in Beijing cause flooding, transportation disruptions July 16

Event

The city of Beijing issued rainfall and flood alerts on Monday, July 16, after heavy rains on July 15 and 16. From 20:00 (local time) Sunday, July 15, to 14:00 Monday, July 16, Beijing received an average of 39.9 mm (1.6 in) of rain, with some areas in Miyun district reporting over 300 mm (11.8 in). The flooding closed Yuzhi East Road in Changping district, as well as several lanes of the Beijing-Tibet expressway, causing significant traffic disturbances. Across Beijing district, nine roads were reported to have collapsed. In addition, significant flight disruptions have been reported as of Monday, with over 670 domestic flights canceled from Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) alone; international flights reported far fewer disruptions, although multiple flights did experience delays. The Beijing Meteorological Service expects downpours to continue through Wednesday, July 18, with 30-40 mm (1.2-1.6 in) of rainfall forecast on Tuesday alone. As further rain is forecast in the area in the coming days, hazardous conditions (flooding, mudslides, blocked roads, etc.) are expected to persist and continued transportation disruptions are likely in the near-term.

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for continued traffic disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Potentially impacted air travelers are advised to verify the status of their flights prior to departure for the airport and to anticipate potential delays.
