Libya/Tunisia: Libya closes Ras Ajdir border crossing July 15 after brief opening

Libyan authorities close Ras Ajdir border crossing with Tunisia July 15 following reports of harassment of Libyan citizens in Tunisia

Warning

Event

Libyan security authorities in Ras Ajdir closed the border crossing with Tunisia on Sunday, July 15, after briefly opening the crossing earlier the same day. The decision to again close the border was made after Libyan officials received information that Tunisian smugglers were harassing Libyan citizens and preventing them from reaching northern Tunisia. The Ras Ajdir crossing has been closed since Tuesday, July 10, with Libyan authorities demanding that Tunisia take stronger measures to protect Libyan travelers from such harassment. The border will reportedly remain closed until Libyan security officials meet with the Minister of Interior to discuss recent developments; as of Tuesday, July 17, it was unclear when such a meeting would take place.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to plan accordingly, monitor developments to the situation, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
