China: Tropical Storm Son-Tinh forecast to hit Hainan July 17-18

Tropical Storm Son-Tinh forecast to hit Hainan July 17-18; flooding, mudslides, and consequent transportation disruptions and power outages possible

Warning

Event

Tropical Storm Son-Tinh is forecast to hit Hainan on the evening of Tuesday, July 17 (local time), into the morning of Wednesday, July 18, bringing high winds and heavy rainfall of 7.5-15 cm (3-6 in) to the island. Localized rainfall totals of 25 cm (10 in) are possible in some areas. Consequent flooding, mudslides, and associated transportation disruptions and power outages are possible over the coming days.

Context

Typhoons and tropical storms regularly hit China from June through November after gathering strength in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean or the South China Sea.

Advice

Individuals in Hainan are advised to follow all instructions as issued by local authorities (e.g. possible evacuation orders), follow local weather forecasts, and verify travel plans prior to setting out. In the event of further flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
