National civil servant strike every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and public media strike July 17-19; related protests possible
Event
Employees of national public media outlets launched a three-day strike on Tuesday, July 17. The strike coincides with weekly national strikes by the National Union of Workers of Guinea-Bissau (UNTG) taking place every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday until further notice. The strikes are being held to demand the implementation of a new salary scale as well as better working conditions. All public media have ceased publication as of July 18 and all administrative offices are likely to remain closed on strike days, with only minimum services provided at hospitals. Related protests and transportation disruptions are possible.
Context
The UNTG held several strikes in June to demand increased salaries. Their demands remain unmet.
Advice
Individuals in Guinea-Bissau, particularly the capital Bissau, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations and protests due to the risk of violence, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
