Warning

Event

Militants with links to the Islamic State (IS) attacked a Libyan National Army (LNA) checkpoint and police station in Al Uqaylah near Ajdabiya on Tuesday, July 24, killing two policemen and injuring several others. Following heavy clashes with LNA forces, 12 members of the militant group were reportedly killed. According to local media, several emergency vehicles were burned and at least one person was kidnapped as the attackers fled the area. Details regarding the situation are still emerging. Additional clashes between militants and security forces are possible in the near-term.

Context

Libya has been divided into rival governments and factions with their own militias and political parties since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. The security situation in Libya remains precarious and there is little to no sign of a return of relative stability in the near-term.

Advice

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
