Uber and Cabify resume operations in Barcelona July 27 following temporary suspension July 25-26

Warning

Event

Car services, notably Uber and Cabify, resumed operations in Barcelona on Friday, July 27. Operations had been temporarily suspended since July 25 following alleged assaults by taxi drivers on Uber and Cabify vehicles carried out during a taxi strike.

Context

Around 2000 taxi drivers reportedly participated in the strike and associated protests July 25-26 to denounce the removal of local laws which limit the number of licenses granted to vehicle-for-hire services (VTC) - a move which is expected to increase the competition faced by taxis from car services.

Advice

Individuals in Barcelona are advised to monitor developments to the situation and avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution.
