Violent unrest and roadblocks reported in Colombo after rail unions begin sudden strike August 8

Warning

Event

Violent demonstrations and roadblocks were reported in Colombo on Wednesday, August 8, in response to a sudden strike by rail workers. Several rail workers' unions began a surprise indefinite strike at 15:00 (local time) on August 8, to denounce the government's failure to address salary concerns. Despite the deployment of additional buses, the strike stranded thousands of commuters, who blocked a portion of Olcott Mawatha Road and violently clashed with trade union representatives. Local sources reported that additional security forces had been deployed to Fort Railway Station and other main stations. As of 20:30 (local time), heavy road traffic was reported in the vicinity of Fort Railway Station. Additional protests and traffic disruptions are possible for the duration of the strike. It is unclear when the strike is expected to end.

Advice

Individuals in Colombo are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests due to the risk of potential violence, confirm rail transportation reservations, and allow for additional time to reach their destinations.
