China: Police to increase traffic controls

Traffic police to step up inspections of high-risk vehicles amid the busy summer holiday travel season

Informational

Event

The Chinese authorities have asked police to step up inspections on high-risk vehicles (chartered buses for tourists, vehicles carrying hazardous substances, heavy trucks) and crack down on overloading, speeding, and fatigued driving amid the summer holiday travel season. The move follows a series of road traffic accidents involving speeding, fatigued driving, and drunk driving (e.g. nine passengers killed after a truck overturned and fell onto two cars in Guangdong province on August 1).

Context

Road accidents are common in China due to the poor quality of roads, high volume of traffic, and poor driving standards. This risks are increased in the summer due to an influx of tourists, high temperatures, and heavy rainstorms.

Advice

Individuals present in China are advised to drive with caution. If involved in a traffic accident, call the police and do not move your vehicle until they arrive, making sure you and your passengers are in a safe place. Adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.
