India: Militants attack checkpoint in Kashmir September 7 /update 3

Event

Police officials reported that militants assaulted a police checkpoint in Anantnag district (Jammu and Kashmir state) on the night (local time) of Friday, September 7. Security forces killed one terrorist during the fighting and one police was wounded. According to the police, the militants were attempting to steal weapons from the checkpoint. Additional militant attacks on security forces are possible in Kashmir in the near-term.

Context

Insurgents (locals or Pakistani nationals) have been fighting Indian rule in Jammu and Kashmir since 1989. Some 70,000 people have died and many more have been injured in related violence, uprisings, and military crackdowns.
