Libya: Attack at NOC headquarters in Tripoli September 10

Explosions believed to potentially be terrorist in nature were reported at the National Oil Corporation (NOC) headquarters in the Dahra area of Tripoli, on Monday morning, September 10 (local time). According to local sources, six terrorists believed to be affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) entered the building and took hostages. Further sources indicated that the Rada Deterrence Force (RDF) and the Tripoli Revolutionaries Brigade (TRB) have been deployed to the area. An operation is reportedly being planned to rescue the hostages. An increased security force presence is thus to be anticipated, as well as potential traffic disruptions in the area.

Context

Tripoli is currently under a ceasefire brokered by the UN on September 5 following the eruption of violent clashes between rival militias. Libya has been divided into rival governments and factions with their own militias and political parties since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. The security situation in Libya remains precarious and there is little to no sign of a return of relative stability in the near-term.
