Bermuda: Hurricane Florence expected to miss Bermuda /update 3

Hurricane Florence forecast to pass well south of Bermuda on September 11; dangerous swells still expected to affect the island

Warning

Event

As of 17:00 (AST) on Monday, September 10, Hurricane Florence is expected to strengthen in the coming days but will pass well south of Bermuda. However, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned that the swells generated by Florence will affect the island in the coming hours, likely causing life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. The storm is currently located approximately 845 km (525 mi) south-southeast of Bermuda. No hurricane warnings or watches have been issued for Bermuda as of September 10.

Context

Hurricane Florence formed as a tropical depression off the coast of Africa, bringing tropical storm conditions to Cape Verde on August 30. It strengthened to a hurricane on September 4, making it the third hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season. The western Atlantic experiences tropical cyclones and hurricanes from June through November.

Advice

Individuals in Bermuda are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to advice issued by local authorities, and refrain from beach or ocean activities; hurricanes can produce dangerous waves and deadly rip currents even at large distances from the storm.
