China: Travel disruptions in Hainan and Guangdong due to Typhoon Barijat

Ferry and railway services impacted in Guangdong and Hainan provinces by the arrival of Typhoon Barijat

Warning

Event

Ferry and train services in and between Guangdong and Hainan provinces were suspended on Wednesday, September 12, ahead of the arrival of Typhoon Barijat, expected to make landfall between western Guangdong and eastern Hainan on September 13. Ferries crossing the Qiongzhou Strait, between Hainan and Guangdong, were suspended at 14:00 (local time) September 12, as were trains serving Hainan island and the Qiongzhou Strait.

Context

Typhoon Barijat formed on the morning of September 12 in the South China Sea. It is the 23rd typhoon of the year in the region.

Advice

Individuals present in Guangdong and Hainan provinces are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, obey instructions issued by the local authorities, and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
