Caribbean: Tropical Storm Isaac to bring rain to Greater Antilles Sep. 15-17 /update 2

Event

Tropical Storm Isaac passed through the Lesser Antilles and is set to curve slightly northward, bringing rain to the Greater Antilles from Saturday, September 15, through Monday, September 17. Jamaica's Meteorological Service issued a severe weather warning from Sunday, September 16, to Monday, as it braces for 10 cm (4 in) of rain with isolated amounts of up to 15 cm (6 in). Heavy rain of 5-10 cm (2-4 in) is also expected in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, southern Dominican Republic, and southwestern Haiti. As of 23:00 (local time), the storm was located 315 km (196 mi) south of Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) and moving west. The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned of strong winds of 65 km/h (40 mph) and possible flash flooding. Transportation, power, and telecommunication disruptions are also possible. 

Context

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the largest concentration of storms typically occurring between August and October. Researchers predicted a slightly below-average hurricane season for 2018.

Individuals present in the abovementioned regions are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation and power disruptions, obey instructions issued by the local authorities, and avoid flood-prone areas until the situation stabilizes. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
