Libya: Tripoli Airport reopens after brief closure October 2

Event

Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport (MJI) resumed its operations on Tuesday, October 2, after having shut down for several hours due to rockets fired in its vicinity. All flights had been suspended during this brief period. The airport recently suffered a longer closure due to insecurity, reopening on September 26.

Context

The October 2 attack comes amid a ceasefire observed by local armed groups since September 26, which had led to a decline in reported violence. Fighting had already decreased in Tripoli since previous deals were struck between various militias on September 24. Tensions had escalated on September 22, when Government of National Accord (GNA) backed Tripoli militias launched Operation Badr against the Seventh (Kani) Brigade, originating from Tarhunah.

This followed the establishment of another tenuous ceasefire between local armed groups, initially brokered by the UN on September 4, which aimed at putting an end to hostilities ongoing around Tripoli since August 27.
