Libya: Potential water shortages due to repeated attacks on wells
Libyan government warns of recurring attacks on water wells October 16; future water cuts possible
Event
The Libyan government issued a warning denouncing repeated attacks on water wells on Tuesday, October 16, after an armed group shut down a water supply plant in Tarhuna the day prior; the motives behind the assault are unclear. Over 73 water wells are currently out of service in Libya, resulting in a production loss of around 400,000 cubic meters of water daily. Water shortages in Libyan cities supplied by affected wells are possible in the near future.
Advice
Individuals in Libya are advised to be prepared for water cuts (i.e. stock up on bottled water), limit water usage, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities.
