Congo: Fuel shortages in Brazzaville

A fuel shortage is affecting the capital Brazzaville as of Monday, November 5. The shortage is reportedly due to logistical issues with the transport of petroleum products between the cities of Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville, and is resulting in long queues at Brazzaville's gas stations as well as transportation and business disruptions.

The shortages come amid intermittent power outages in Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire - ongoing since October 21 and scheduled to continue until December 5 - due to scheduled maintenance on the country's main power plant.

Associated protests cannot be ruled out.

Individuals present in Brazzaville are advised to fill up vehicles whenever fuel is available, ensure sufficient fuel reserves before all long journeys, and expect longer waiting times at gas stations. In Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, individuals are advised to keep battery-operated devices fully charged whenever possible, keep in mind that crime rates tend to rise after nightfall in areas without street lighting, and be cautious when driving or crossing streets if traffic signals are not functioning. Generally speaking, individuals throughout the country are advised to avoid all demonstrations and follow any instructions issued by the local authorities.
