India: Six wounded in IED blast in Chhattisgarh November 14 /update 4

Event

The recent spate of attacks in southern Chhattisgarh state continued on Wednesday, November 14, as an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in Bijapur district, wounding six people. The attack reportedly targeted a Border Security Force (BSF) van about 7 km (4 mi) from the town of Bijapur; five BSF personnel and one civilian were wounded. Similar attacks are possible in the near term in Chhattisgarh, particularly in southern areas of the state.

Context

The Maoist insurgency has been active for several decades in rural areas of the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkand, Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal, as well as in the border region around Andhra Pradesh. An estimated 6000 people have died in the past 20 years, though activities have decreased recently due, in part, to a security crackdown. Restrictions on the movement of foreigners are in place for some rural areas of eastern India, including parts of Chhattisgarh. Chhattisgarh holds statewide legislative elections this November; southern areas completed their election on November 12 and northern regions will vote on November 28.
