Hong Kong: Trial of Occupy Central leaders begins November 19

Event

The trial of several pro-democracy activists began on Monday, November 19, at the West Kowloon courthouse. The defendants have been charged with acts of public nuisance carried out during the 2014 Occupy Central movement. The trial is expected to last 20 days. Several hundred supporters had gathered outside the courthouse as the trial began. Further localized protests, along with heightened security, can be expected throughout the duration of the trial, and more so once a verdict is delivered.

Context

Occupy Central protests (also dubbed the Umbrella Revolution) took place in downtown Hong Kong from September to December 2014. Strikes, sit-ins, and roadblocks were held daily, paralyzing the city. Close to 1000 activists were arrested.
