Gabon: Opposition protests in Libreville November 26-30 /update 10

Event

Supporters of the opposition party Coalition pour la Nouvelle République are planning to stage a protest in the capital Libreville on Monday, November 26. They are denouncing constitutional violations and demanding the resignation of the Constitutional Court president, Marie-Madeleine Mborantsouo, as well as demanding that their leader, Jean Ping, be sworn as president. Protesters are expected to gather at the Marché-Banane, located in the PK8 district of the capital, in the afternoon (local time). The opposition also called for further protests to take place throughout the week of November 26-30. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are likely. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

Opposition supporters and civil society groups are denouncing an amendment made to the constitution on November 14 allowing Vice President Pierre-Claver Maganga Moussavou to lead a Ministry Council amid the temporary absence of President Ali Bongo.

President Bongo is currently recovering after being hospitalized at King Faisal Hospital in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) on October 24. Reports indicate President Bongo suffered a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). According to the Gabonese government, the president remains able to perform his duties, despite his absence. However, uncertainty over Bongo's health has fomented tensions across the country, already high since the 2016 presidential elections, which were perceived by many, notably the opposition front runner Ping, as fraudulent.
