Increased activity at Turrialba Volcano was reported on December 12-13. Ash plumes between 3 400 and 5 000 meters (11, 155 - 16,400 feet) above sea level were reported on Wednesday, December 12, leading to air transportation disruptions, notably at Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO), which serves the capital San Jose, located approximately 35 km (25 mi) from the volcano. No evacuation order has been issued as of Thursday, December 13.

Continued volcanic activity, along with associated transportation disruptions, are possible in the coming hours and days. Poor air quality could also pose a health risk.

Turrialba is located in the Santa Cruz District (Cartago province). Volcanic and seismic activity is relatively common in Costa Rica, which is home to a number of volcanoes including Turrialba, Irazú, and Poás.
