Mexico/Guatemala: 6.6-magnitude earthquake reported in Chiapas Feb. 6
6.6-magnitude earthquake strikes near Tapachula (Chiapas) February 1; no tsunami warning issued
Event
An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale struck 13 km (8 mi) northwest of Tapachula (Chiapas) at 10:14 (local time) on Friday, February 1. According to the US-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, no tsunami warning has been issued. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Guatemala. As of Monday morning, there have been no reports of major damage or casualties. Potentially powerful aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.

Earthquakes are common in Mexico, which is located along the seismically active Pacific "Ring of Fire."

In the event of further earthquakes and aftershocks, individuals should protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls (ideally in a corner), and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
