Mauritius: Tropical Cyclone Funani apporaching the island Feb. 7

Event

As of Thursday, February 7, Tropical Cyclone Funani was centred at about 160 km of the Rodrigues island of Mauritius, prompting the Plaine Corail airport (RRG) to temporarily suspend all flights operations until further notice. Cyclone Funani is forecast to strengthen into a full-blown hurricane-force storm by Thursday, February 8. Hazardous sea and weather conditions are anticipated, including winds up to 195 km/h (121 mph), and sea swells. Another Tropical Cyclone, Gelena, is also approaching the island and could potentially intensify in the coming hours and days. Further transportation disruptions are to be anticipated in the coming hours and days.

Context

The island experiences an annual cyclone season from November through April, during which time tropical storms and torrential rain can result in significant material damage.
