South Africa: Protests amid state of the Capital address in Pretoria April 11

Protests ongoing in Pretoria April 11 amid State of the Capital address; anticipate localized traffic disruptions

Warning

Event

Protests are being reported in Pretoria as of the morning (local time) of Thursday, April 11, as the city's executive mayor is expected to deliver the annual State of the Capital address at the Tshwane House at 11:00 (local time). Protesters - who denounce a lack of service delivery and corruption issues, among other things - have erected roadblocks and are burning tyres on roads across the city, leading to significant transportation disruptions and a heavy security presence. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

On a related note, road closures associated with the government's event are expected to be in place until 12:00 throughout the central business district (CBD). Lingering disruptions are likely until the end of the day.

Advice

Individuals present in Pretoria are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all gatherings, and plan alternative road travels, bypassing the CBD during the march.
