Clashes and localized traffic disruptions reported in Somerset West and Khayelitsha (Western Cape province) April 11; heightened security presence expected over the coming hours

Disruptive protests have been reported near the Somerset West and Khayelitsha areas (Western Cape province) on Thursday, April 11, as hundreds denounced perceived land grabs and the lack of basic services in some localities. Demonstrators erected roadblocks forcing the partial shutdown of the N2 highway between Somerset West and Sir Lowry's Pass, while violent protests were reported in Khayelitsha on Thursday. Looting and clashes with security forces also took place in Nomzamo between the evening hours (local time) of Wednesday, April 10, to Thursday morning.
