Spain: Heightened security measures implemented nationwide until April 28

Event

Authorities have implemented heightened security measures, including an increased security presence at public events, nationwide through Sunday, April 28. During Holy Week celebrations from Thursday, April 18, through Monday, April 22, 400 additional officers will be deployed in Madrid. Another 1600 security personnel will be in Sevilla to ensure safety during the events. On Wednesday, April 17, anti-terrorist officers raided the apartment of a suspected jihadist in Sevilla who was allegedly planning an attack targeting Holy Week processions in the city. The suspect, who was visiting Morocco, was then arrested by Moroccan security forces. According to the Interior Ministry, the heightened security measures will remain in place through the April 28 general elections.

Context

The Spanish terrorist threat level is currently assessed as high. On April 14, the Islamic State (IS) released a video calling for supporters to carry out attacks in Spain during Holy Week. In August 2017, a van plowed through crowds on the Las Ramblas pedestrian street of Barcelona. Around eight hours later, a car drove into pedestrians in the coastal resort town of Cambrils. IS claimed responsibility for the attacks.
