Bulgaria: Pope Francis to visit Sofia and Rakovski May 5-7

Pope Francis will visit Sofia and the town of Rakovski May 5-7; heightened security measures and disruptions expected

Pope Francis will visit Bulgaria from Sunday, May 5, until Tuesday, May 7, before leaving for North Macedonia. The Pope is scheduled to arrive at Sofia International Airport (SOF) at 10:00 (local time) on Sunday. Public events will be held at Alexander Nevsky Square in Sofia at 15:00 and Knyaz Alexander Square at 16:45. On Monday, May 6, Francis will fly to Rakovski to visit a refugee camp and meet with members of the Catholic community before flying back to Sofia at 17:15. He will then hold a public prayer ceremony at Nezavisimost Square starting at 18:15. Heightened security measures, including an increase in checkpoints and movement restrictions, will be in place around all of the papal events. Traffic disruptions and increased regulations will also be in effect in Sofia and Rakovski through May 7.
