Militants kill three people and kidnap one other in Ghadduwah (Fezzan region) May 9; similar attacks possible over coming weeks

Informational

Event

Gunmen, suspected Islamic State (IS) affiliates, have reportedly opened fire in the town of Ghadduwah (Fezzan region) on Thursday, May 9, killing three people and kindapping one other before retreating to the desert. Similar attacks in Fezzan region are possible over the coming weeks.

Context

The attack comes after nine Libyan soldiers were killed on May 4 in an attack claimed by IS on a training camp belonging to the Libyan National Army (LNA) forces.

IS militants have continued to carry out attacks on security forces and infrastructure in Libya since being driven out of their former stronghold of Sirte in late 2016.

Advice

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
