Libya: Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport (MJI) remains operational following airstrike June 6 /update 1

Event

An airstrike targeted Mitiga International Airport (MJI) in Tripoli in the early morning (local time) of Thursday, June 6, though the airport remained operational. Airport authorities and local sources stated that the airstrike, which was conducted around 02:00 by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army (LNA), hit far from the main runway and passenger facilities. No casualties were reported. Further airstrikes are possible in the near term in Tripoli, including at MJI.

Context

The LNA launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4 and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli en masse on April 7. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
