On Thursday, June 6, Mexico deployed 6000 National Guard troops to its southern border with Guatemala in an attempt to prevent migrants and migrant caravans from entering the country. This increased border security may result in delays and longer processing time for those traveling into Mexico via Guatemala.
Context
The increased level of security is due to economic pressure applied by the US government. On May 30, President Donald Trump stated the US will impose a five percent tariff on all Mexican exports to the US starting June 10 if Mexico did not assist in stopping the flow of undocumented migrants across the Mexican/American border.
US and Mexican officials have been collaborating since May 30 to avoid the tax; as of June 7, President Trump has stated that efforts have thus far fallen short of avoiding additional tariffs on June 10.
