Honduras: Protests planned in Tegucigalpa June 28

Event

Protesters will once again take to the street in protest on Friday, June 28, against President Juan Orlando Hernández in Tegucigalpa. This follows one day of protest, when individuals took to the streets on Thursday, June 27, to mark the ten-year anniversary of the 2009 coup d'état and continue protesting against President Hernández. Streets were blockaded in the capital and several major cities, demand the immediate dismissal of the president.

American Airlines and United Airlines have canceled flights into the country for Friday, in order to ensure the safety of passengers.

Similar blockades should be expected in Tegucigalpa and other urban centers on Friday. Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are very likely near all protests. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Context

The Central American country has experienced a wave of violent demonstrations against President Juan Orlando Hernández in the last month, after the government presented reforms in the education and health sectors. Many doctors and teachers, with the support of students, have been demonstrating and blockading streets for over a month against two government decrees that, in their opinion, privatize health and education.

On Monday, June 24, police stormed a university and shot at students in Tegucigalpa, injuring eight.
