Costa Rica: Protests expected to continue in San José July 2

Protests against the introduction of a Value Added Tax are expected to continue on Tuesday, July 2, after truck drivers disrupted traffic on Monday, July 1, in San José. Route 32 between San José and Limon (Limon Province) remains blocked by truck drivers as of Tuesday. Police have stated several roads across the country will be closed, with a full list here.

President Carlos Alvarado announced the government is ready and willing to negotiate starting July 2, though only on the condition that blockades are lifted.

Further related protests are expected in the coming days. Associated transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence are expected in the vicinity of the protests.
