Libya: Flights operations at Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport (MJI) to resume July 30 /update 1

Flights operations reportedly remain suspended at Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport (MJI) as of late (local time) Monday, July 29, after the facility was reportedly targeted by multiple mortar strikes. Local sources indicate the airport will likely resume operations at 06:00 on Tuesday, July 30. The developments follow a series of mortar strikes that hit near MJI at approximately 18:00 and 21:00 on Monday. No casualties or damages were immediately reported. 

Further airstrikes are possible in the near term in Tripoli, including at MJI.

Context

Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport (MJI) has been targeted by air and mortar strikes multiple times in recent months; however, the strikes have not damaged the main runway or any civilian facilities and normal flight operations were typically restored within a few hours.

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4 and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli en masse on April 7. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
