South Africa: Civic group to block roads in protest in Cape Town August 8

Civic group plans to block roads in Cape Town on August 8 during protests; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected

Warning

Event

Members of the Idas Valley Housing Committee (IVHC) are reportedly planning to block major roads in Cape Town on Thursday, August 8, to expedite their housing demands from the Stellenbosch Municipality. Though authorities have said they do not know the extent of support for the protest action, participants are expected to block major roads - including highways in and out of the central business district - between 05:00 and 11:00 (local time). Local media outlets report that 13 areas will be targeted: Beacon Valley, Tafelsig, Eastridge, Woodlands, Parkwood, Lavender Hill, Kensington, Factreton, Ocean View, Elsies Rivier, Delft, Bo-Kaap, Ottery, Egoli informal settlement, and Mamre. IVHC have said that if the authorities do not meet their demands after 21 days then they will repeat the protest action indefinitely.

A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are expected, as well as an increased demand for train and metro services.

Advice

Individuals in Cape Town are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations, and anticipate transportation and business disruptions.
