Warning

Event

The Syndicat indépendant des cheminots (SIC), the union that represents Belgium’s railway workers, has submitted a strike notice for Saturday, August 17. Workers are expected to strike nationwide, which may result in reduced service across the country. The industrial action may also affect travelers going to and from the Pukkelpop music festival, which is being held near Hasselt from August 15-18. Negotiation between SIC and HR Rail are scheduled to be held on Tuesday, August 13, in an attempt to avert the strike.

Context

SIC previously held a strike on July 27 following failed negotiations regarding guaranteed holidays for rail workers. During the action, train service was reduced to 60 percent.

Advice

Individuals in Belgium are advised to confirm rail timetables, maintain flexible itineraries, and seek alternate means of transportation as needed.
