Niger: Deadly flooding affects over 70,000 people as of September 5

Seasonal rains cause deadly flooding throughout Niger, including in the capital Niamey, as of Thursday, September 5. Over 70,000 people have been affected by the floods, which have resulted in at least 42 fatalities. Around 5000 homes have also been destroyed. According to Niamey’s governor, water levels in the capital rose to 6.3 m (21 ft), which haven’t been seen in more than 50 years. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that there is an increase risk of an associated cholera outbreak during the rainy season. Additional rain is forecast in the coming weeks, which may exacerbate current conditions.  Associated transportation and business disruptions are likely in areas affected by flooding.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions and flight reservations before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
