Bahamas: Tropical Storm Warning lifted after Humberto skirts islands September 15 /update 2

Event

On Sunday, September 15, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) lifted a Tropical Storm Warning for the northwestern Bahamas, after Tropical Storm Humberto veered away from the islands. As of 05:00 (local time) on Sunday, Humberto is located at approximately 28.3°N 77.7°W (map here) and is tracking north-northwest at 11 kph (7 mph). The storm has maximum sustained winds of 96 kph (60 mph) and is expected to gradually strengthen into a hurricane over the coming days. A sharp turn to the northeast is expected Monday, September 16.

Gusty winds continue to affect portions of the northwestern Bahamas as of Sunday but are expected to subside by the evening. Humberto is forecast to produce rainfall accumulations of 2.5-7 cm (1-3 in) across the Bahamas through Monday, with isolated totals of 15 cm (6 in). Humberto is also expected to bring strong winds and dangerous swells, particularly along the northwest.

Individuals in areas forecast to be affected by the system are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
