Libya: Tripoli’s Mitiga Airport (MJI) targeted again September 15, 16 /update 8
LNA forces target Mitiga Airport in Tripoli (MJI) for a second consecutive day on September 15, 16; further attacks possible
Event
Mitiga International Airport (MJI) in Tripoli was targeted by airstrikes for a second consecutive day between 19:00 and 21:00 (local time) on Sunday, September 15, and again at 02:00 on Monday, September 16. According to local reports, the Libyan National Army (LNA) claimed it targeted and destroyed a Turkish facility located there.
Similar attacks targeting MJI are possible over the near term.
Context
On September 14, runway damage was reported at Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport (MJI) after indirect fire impacted the facility following a Libyan National Army (LNA) airstrike in the area in the morning. MJI has been targeted by air and mortar strikes multiple times in recent months. Commercial flight operations have been suspended since September 1 after the facility was struck by artillery fire.
The LNA launched an offensive into southern Tripoli on April 4. The advance halted 10-15km south of central Tripoli within a week and frontlines have remained largely static since. Some have moved south, out of the city. The initial offensive also triggered several foreign missions and international organisations to temporarily withdraw or to otherwise consider their international footprint in Libya. Central Tripoli itself remains permissive and conducive to most international operations, providing professional security providers are engaged.
Advice
Individuals in Tripoli are advised to monitor the situation, avoid areas affected by fighting, maintain safe and current evacuation plans, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Libya remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
