Bermuda: Severe weather forecast due to Hurricane Humberto September 18-19 /update 1

Weather warnings in place ahead of the passage of Hurricane Humberto September 18-19; heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and associated disruptions expected

The Bermuda Weather Service issued a hurricane warning at 18:00 (local time) on Tuesday, September 17, ahead of the passage of Hurricane Humberto in the coming days. As of 21:00 on Tuesday, Humberto is located at approximately 31.2°N 71.6°W (map here), according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC). Humberto is tracking east-northeast at 19 kph (12 mph) with maximum sustained winds of 185 kph (115 mph). The center of Humberto is forecast to pass the northwest and north of Bermuda on the night of Wednesday, September 18, and is expected to bring heavy rain and gusty thunderstorms on Wednesday, through Thursday, September 19.

Associated power outages and disruptions to transportation and business services are possible in areas forecast to be affected by the system over the coming days.

Individuals in Bermuda are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate adverse weather and power and transportation disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
