Mexico: National earthquake drill on September 19
Authorities to hold a national earthquake drill on September 19; transportation disruptions expected
Event
A national earthquake drill will take place on Thursday, September 19, which will resemble a real earthquake with the alarm engaged. The government has asked citizens to participate in order to better respond and minimize loss of life and damage during an authentic incident.
The drill will begin at 10:00 (local time), during which the seismic alert will be activated through 12,170 speakers, as well as radio and television broadcasts. Then, the evacuation protocol will begin, using air and ground reinforcements. The simulation is expected to last 30 minutes in all.
Transportation disruptions, including road closures, and a heightened security presence is to be expected before, during, and after the drill.
Advice
Individuals in Mexico are advised to monitor developments to the situation, and obey all instructions issued by local authorities.
In the case of an earthquake individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
