Warning

Event

An ongoing protest by the Total Shutdown movement is causing severe traffic and road closures in Cape Town as of 08:15 (local time) on Wednesday, September 25. Transport authorities have reportedly closed Hanover Park Avenue from Downberg Road, and Lonedown Road from Heinz Road. Online sources also report severe traffic in Edgemead and Langa. Police officers  are deploying to the affected areas and have reportedly used stun grenades to disperse protesters blocking roads. The demonstration is due to end at 10:00. Organizers have said that they will protest again in seven days if the government does not take concrete action against issues such as crime, unemployment, and gender-based violence.

A heightened security presence and further transportation disruptions are expected, including an increased demand for train and metro services.

Advice

Individuals in Cape Town are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations, allow for additional travel time, and anticipate transportation and business disruptions.
