Ukraine: Nationalist protest in Kyiv October 6

Event

A civil society group has called for a protest in Kyiv on Sunday, October 6, in opposition to the Steinmeier Formula. Participants plan to gather at 12:00 (local time) at Independence Square. At least 2500 people are expected to attend, according to event pages on social media. Similar protests are possible in major urban areas. 

A heightened security presence and localized transport disruptions are expected. Clashes between security forces and protesters, as well as counterprotests, cannot be ruled out. 

Context

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky signed a deal known as the Steinmeier Formula on October 1 that affords special status to areas in the Donbas region, prompting ultra-nationalist groups to protest in Kyiv and other urban centers.
