Trade unions call for a march in Guatemala City on October 20; heightened security presence and associated disruptions expected

Leaders of several trade unions have called for a march in Guatemala City on Sunday, October 20, to demand better labor rights - coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the 1944 revolution. Participants plan to gather at 08:30 (local time) at Trébol in Zone 11 before heading to Parque Central in Zone 1. A union representative has reportedly said that approximately 30,000 people are expected to attend the march.

A heightened security presence and associated transportation and business disruptions are expected during and along the march route. 

Context

On October 20, 1994, students and military leaders overthrew the government of Jorge Ubico. Guatemala celebrates the day as a public holiday.
