On Sunday, November 17, Gotabaya Rajapaksa was declared the winner of the Sri Lankan presidential election held on Saturday, November 16. Rajapaksa, who represented the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party, won 52 percent of the votes, defeating the ruling New Democratic Front (NDF) party's Sajith Premadasa. President-elect Gotabaya Rajapaksa will be sworn in on Monday, November 18.

Associated political rallies are possible over the coming days and clashes between rival political supporters cannot be ruled out.
