Officials announced on Sunday, January 12, that Tripoli's Mitiga International airport (MJI) would reopen after being closed since Wednesday, January 8, due to rocket fire. This announcement follows a ceasefire agreement between the Libyan National Army (LNA) and the Government of National Accord (GNA), which was reached early (local time) on Sunday.
All airlines will reportedly resume flights to and from MJI over the coming hours and days. Residual flight delays are possible over the near term.
Context
The LNA launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and GNA airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
