Libya: Ceasefire declared over January 15 /update 2
Fighting expected to continue as ceasefire is declared over as of January 15; attacks expected over the near term
Event
The Speaker of the House of Representatives has announced on Wednesday, January 15, that the ceasefire between the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) and the LNA is now over, and that the conflict will continue. This announcement was made following the LNA commander Khalifa Haftar's decision to leave ceasefire talks in Moscow on Tuesday, January 14. Haftar cited a need for a period of 48 hours to consider signing the agreement. A ceasefire came into effect on Sunday, January 12.
A resumption of attacks and clashes are therefore expected to continue over the near term.
Context
The LNA launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and GNA airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
