The US Geological Survey recorded a 5.3-magnitude earthquake around 18 km (11 mi) east-northeast of San Jeronimo Ixtepec (Oaxaca) on Friday, January 17. The quake hit at around 00:43 (local time) at a depth of 27.4 km (17 mi). There were no immediate reports of injuries or significant infrastructure damage.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.
