Libya: Attack targeting Tripoli port reported February 18

Event

According to the UN special envoy in Libya, the port of Tripoli was attacked in the early afternoon (local time) on Tuesday, February 18, resulting in a massive blaze on the dockside. Local sources report that the port was struck with approximately 10-14 indirect fire (IDF) strikes. According the the Libyan National Army (LNA), the attack ignited a Turkish vessel carrying ammunition; this claim has not been confirmed. An increased security presence is likely around the port over the coming hours and days.

Context

The Libyan National Army (LNA) launched an offensive on Tripoli on April 4, 2019, and prompted evacuations of foreigners from Tripoli on April 7, 2019. LNA and Government of National Accord (GNA) airstrikes have been sporadically reported since April 8, 2019. The bulk of recent fighting has been concentrated in the southern suburbs of the capital.
