Ukraine: Demonstrations possible in Odessa May 2
Commemorative rallies possible in Odessa (Odessa Oblast) on May 2; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected
Event
Spontaneous rallies and demonstrations are possible in Odessa (Odessa Oblast) on Saturday, May 2, amid the sixth anniversary of fatal clashes between pro-Ukraine and pro-Russia activists that killed 48 people on May 2, 2014. In 2019, previous related events were held in the Kulykove Pole area. Participants may gather in the city despite a ban on public gatherings due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Tensions might also be exacerbated as several deputies recently asked another investigation for the deadly mass riots on Thursday, April 30. According to police officials, around 1500 security personnel will be deployed on Saturday.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in Odessa.
Advice
Individuals in Ukraine, notably Odessa, are advised to monitor developments relating to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
