Hong Kong: Tropical cyclone warning issued as tropical cyclone Nuri approaches June 12

Event

The Hong Kong Observatory issued a standby signal number 1 (first on a ten-tier scale) on Friday, June 12, as tropical cyclone Nuri approaches the southern coast of China. Nuri is currently located at approximately 17.6°N, 117.2°E and is moving in a northeasterly direction. It is forecast to make landfall in Yangjiang (China) at noon (local time) on Sunday, June 14. Nuri is currently forecast to weaken as it moves towards the coast of China and may become a tropical depression prior to landfall. Nevertheless, Nuri will sustain potentially damaging wind gusts of between 80-97 kmh (50-56 mph) and the Observatory may issue a strong wind signal number 3 based on local wind conditions. The Observatory warned those in low-lying areas to take precautions again potential flooding as rainfall of between 50-100mm (2-4 in) is anticipated.

Flooding associated with rainfall is possible over low-lying areas in the coming days. Associated disruption to transport operations and utility services are also possible during the passing of the storm system.

Individuals present in the affected areas are advised to keep abreast of local weather forecasts, anticipate localized flooding and associated transportation disruptions, plan alternate routes, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
