Gambia: Protest planned outside of US Embassy in Banjul June 13
Protesters plan to gather outside of US Embassy in Banjul on June 13; avoid all protests
Event
The US Embassy in Banjul reported that a protest is planned outside of the Embassy in the Serrekunda area on Saturday, June 13. Demonstrators are expected to gather between 10:00 and 11:00 (local time) on Kairaba Avenue between Pipeline Mosque and the Embassy. The gathering is planned despite regulations under the current state of emergency, which limits public gatherings, however, some reports suggest that authorities have allowed the protest to proceed. The Embassy stated the protest is being held in opposition to unspecified events within the US; however, there have been previous calls for protests in the Gambia over the death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis (Minnesota state) on Monday, May 25.
Overland travel disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of the demonstration.
Context
George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired, and one has since been charged with murder. Black Lives Matter (BLM) supporters gathered on May 26 to denounce the death and actions of the police officers. Clashes ensued between protesters and riot police; with demonstrators throwing bricks and projectiles at police and police property, and police responding with tear gas and rubber bullets as they attempted to disperse the crowds. Protests have since spread to a number of cities across the US and internationally.
Advice
Individuals in Banjul are advised to monitor developments, avoid demonstrations, anticipate a heightened security presence near protest sites, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
